Wild Spain© Carlos SánchezAs far as I know, this is the third book to be titled Wild Spain, following on from Chapman and Buck’s huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ epic of 1893, and the then innovative site guide published by Sheldrake Press in 1988, to which I also contributed. However, as it’s part of a series conceived by New Holland Publishers Ltd, with other tomes published so far being Wild Borneo, Wild Costa Rica and Wild France, the title was never in question.
50,000 words in which to describe the habitats and wildlife of Spain was always going to be a push, especially with the inclusion of the Canary Islands (I was insistent on this point, as they were not covered in OUP’s Travellers’ Nature Guides: Spain). There is such a wealth of fauna and flora in the country, including many species that have their centres of European distribution here, that it was impossible to include them all, much less give detailed information about them. Nevertheless, the principal protagonists – Iberian Lynx, Spanish Imperial Eagle, the Canary Islands’ unique lizards, threatened and endemic plants and butterflies, etc. – are all covered in some detail.
Despite a rather meagre budget for the photographic element, I managed to persuade my good friend Carlos Sánchez of Náyade to provide the pictures of birds, mammals and some reptiles and amphibians, as well as some stunning landscapes, many of which have never before been published in an English-language volume.
