Confirmation of a group of wintering Egyptian Vultures in Cáceres Province
Posted in: Birds | Extremadura | Spanish Mainland, Western Spain
News just through of the confirmation this winter of a group of Egyptian Vultures (of all different ages) wintering in the Cáceres Province. And apparently this has been happening for several years.
The birds apparently keep to a very restricted area (being kept confidential for the moment), but up to 24 different individuals have been counted during the day.
Several different populations are found in Spain, including those resident on Menorca and the endemic subspecies majorensis on Fuerteventura, while the great majority of those on the mainland are migratory (spending the winter in Africa) despite small numbers being found annually in winter in the Doñana area. Interestingly, I don't think those on Menorca have yet been described as a separate subspecies despite notable genetic differences between these and mainland populations. E.g. see Genetically distinct island populations of the Egyptian vulture
