News has been released of the discovery last Friday of the corpse of "Theo", a 7 year old female Iberian Lynx, which was found dead on the side of the road leading to the San Lázaro Lagoon, near Villamanrique de la Condesa.
To add insult to injury, the post-mortem analysis revealed that she was pregnant with two male kittens and that she had also been shot, with seven shotgun pellets lodged in different parts of her body. While the pellets had not directly affected any major organs, her faculties had apparently been impaired as a result.
The loss of every individual is a major setback in the campaign to save the species, the most critically endangered feline in the world (e.g. far rarer even than the Tiger), being one less female of the population of 20 or so in Doñana (of some 50 in total there) and of the population as a whole (of some 200 individuals, with most being in the Sierra Morena).
